Looking for a Honeydue Alternative? An Honest Comparison for Couples (2026)
Full disclosure: this page is written by the maker of Shapital, a shared budgeting app for couples. We're one of the alternatives below, we're biased, and we'll still point you elsewhere when another app fits you better.
Why people go looking for a Honeydue alternative
Read Honeydue's most recent app-store reviews and the same stories repeat. We're paraphrasing real, recent reviews here, not inventing problems:
- Bank connections break, constantly. The most common complaint by far: banks disconnect every few weeks, accounts silently stop updating, and re-linking wipes the categorisation work you'd done. Several reviewers conclude that if you have to double-check every transaction anyway, a spreadsheet would be less work.
- Support doesn't reply. Review after review describes multiple support emails over weeks or months with no answer — including people just trying to delete their accounts. One one-star review is simply titled "Abandoned."
- The app is drifting. Honeydue changed hands in 2021, its joint debit card was discontinued in 2023, it changed hands again in 2024 — the same year it temporarily vanished from Google Play — and updates now arrive roughly twice a year. It still shows ads.
- It's US-only in practice. The bank linking covers US institutions; reviewers abroad report being unable even to set their local currency.
To be fair: when the sync works, Honeydue is genuinely useful and genuinely free. If you're a US couple, your banks connect cleanly, and the ads don't bother you — stay. Free is a great price. The rest of this page is for everyone else.
The alternatives, honestly compared
| App | Price | How data gets in | Couples fit | Outside the US? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YNAB | $109/year | Bank sync + manual | YNAB Together (up to 6) | Partly (US/EU banks) |
| Goodbudget | Free tier; $80/year | Manual (sync on paid tier) | Shared envelopes, 2 devices free | Yes |
| Monarch | ~$100/year | Bank sync | Shared dashboard, not couples-first | No (US-focused) |
| Shapital | Free tier; Premium $4.99/mo or $49.99/yr | Manual — by design | Built for couples | Yes, any country & currency |
YNAB — if you want bank sync that's actively maintained
If your main complaint about Honeydue is neglect rather than bank-linking itself, YNAB is the actively developed alternative: zero-based budgeting, bank imports, and sharing via YNAB Together. The trade-offs its own community talks about: the $109/year price, a learning curve that regularly defeats the less enthusiastic partner, and — worth knowing — plenty of paying users still report entering transactions manually when their Plaid bank connections act up. Bank sync is fragile everywhere, not just at Honeydue.
Goodbudget — if you like envelopes
Goodbudget shares envelope budgets between two logins and works worldwide because it's manual-entry. The free tier is workable for a simple setup (20 envelopes, 2 devices); the paid tier is $80/year. Be aware that key tasks lean on its desktop website, and the interface shows its age — but the envelope method has devoted fans for good reason.
Monarch — if you want a full financial dashboard
Monarch became the default Mint replacement: accounts, investments, budgets, and a shared view for partners, at roughly $100/year. It's a personal-finance dashboard first and a couples budgeting tool second — strong if you want the full picture, overkill if you mainly want to plan and track shared spending. US-focused bank linking applies here too.
Shapital — if you never want a broken sync again
Shapital starts from a different premise: the fastest way to fix broken bank sync is to not have bank sync. You and your partner log spending yourselves — it takes seconds — and both phones show the same budget in real time, with an activity feed of who changed what.
What that buys you, compared to the complaints above:
- Nothing to break. No bank connections, so no monthly re-linking ritual, no silently stale numbers. Your budget is exactly as accurate as what you log.
- Nothing to leak. Your bank credentials are never shared with anyone — not even us. Two-factor authentication protects your account, and there are no ads on any tier.
- Works everywhere. Any country, any currency, fully offline when you have no signal — it syncs when you're back.
- A human answers email. Shapital is built by an independent developer in Johannesburg; support is a person, not a black hole.
The budgeting itself is zero-based (like YNAB, gentler on-ramp), with savings goals, end-of-period wrap-ups, streaks and a year in review to keep both partners engaged. Free to try; Premium is $4.99/month or $49.99/year — about half of YNAB — for a third seat on a shared budget, unlimited budgets, analytics, and PDF/Excel exports. Sharing with one person is free.
Who it's not for: if manually logging expenses is a dealbreaker and you want transactions to appear automatically, choose YNAB or Monarch instead.
How to choose
